Microsoft is due to end support for its popular Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server R2 on 10 October 2023. This article explains the options and why you must upgrade before the deadline hits.

Why is it happening?

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 was the fifth version of the Windows Server operating system. Released to the market in September 2012, and shortly followed by its successor Windows Server 2012 R2, in October 2013.

All Microsoft products and packages follow a fixed lifecycle policy. At the end of life, Microsoft will no longer provide support or security updates for their products. These dates tend to be pre-determined from the day of launch, clearly setting out expectations from the start.

End of support means that Microsoft will no longer support these older versions of its server operating systems. Whilst they will not necessarily cease to work, the outdated systems will no longer receive security updates or patches after the cut-off date. This is not recommended as it poses a significant security and compliance standards risk. It may also increase your chance of data loss and other general performance issues.

Several options include upgrading to a more modern operating system or moving your data to the Cloud. We will also be hosting a webinar in the coming weeks to help you identify and plan in plenty of time for these changes. Please look out for more information from your Account Manager in due course.

Luckily, Microsoft has already announced a replacement for Windows Server 2012 in the form of Windows Server 2022. As well as lower operating costs, Windows Server 2022 offers simplified remote working, advanced analytics, and greater security for modern enterprises.

Of course, many businesses will have been using Windows Server 2012 for a decade, and upgrading to a radically different IT environment may seem overwhelming.

Here are some tips to ease your migration to Windows Server 2022

1. Put your business first

It is crucial to remember that continuing to use an outdated operating system puts your business at significant risk of being hacked or breached. This is because the manufacturer no longer offers security patches, software updates, or technical support. By upgrading to a contemporary operating system such as Windows Server 2022, you can benefit from the most recent updates, security enhancements, and features available.

Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest versions for improved security, performance, and innovation.

2. Check your existing hardware and compatibility with the new operating system

Regarding operating systems, newer versions may demand more memory and processing power to function properly. This can pose a problem for older servers needing help to keep up with the latest technology.

It’s crucial to assess your hardware’s capacity before installing a new operating system. Doing so without considering your existing resources could result in software and server failures, data loss, and an inability for your team to carry out their duties. It’s important to approach this process professionally to ensure smooth operations.

3. Are your existing packages and software compatible?

To run their operations effectively, most businesses rely on various third-party software packages, including accounting, customer relationship management, and design software. These packages are designed to work with the operating systems that were available at the time of their release. However, upgrading your operating system can sometimes result in compatibility issues with these third-party packages.

To avoid any negative impacts on your business, it is important to thoroughly assess your software packages before implementing any upgrades. Failure to do so can lead to employees being unable to use critical software applications, significantly disrupting daily operations.

4. Look at current and emerging market options

The world of technology is ever-changing, and the choice of server replacement options is vast and contingent on your specific needs and software packages. These options include cloud, onsite, or hybrid servers. To ensure that you select the most appropriate server for your requirements, we strongly advise you to consult with our team for a comprehensive assessment.

5. What is your budget?

In the process of upgrading to new server hardware or operating systems, it is crucial to factor in the budget. The cost of the project will depend on the type of upgrade required. By planning and identifying the necessary upgrades, you can allocate the budget accordingly, whether it needs to happen immediately or in the future.

Air IT prioritises transparency and will provide a clear explanation of costs following an audit and consultation of your needs.

What will happen if I still use Windows Server 2012 R2 after 10th October 2023?

It can be tempting to keep your business running on outdated operating systems. After all, they still work, right? The problem is that these systems pose significant security and compliance risks and fail to meet the demands of modern businesses.

If you are still using Windows Server 2012 R2 after 10 October 2023, the operating system will still work, though Microsoft will no longer support it should any issues arise.

This can leave your server and network vulnerable to security threats and vulnerabilities and any compatibility issues with newer software and hardware.

It’s important to remember that the longer you use an out-of-date operating system, the more likely you are to experience issues. That’s why it’s important to take the right steps to start the transition to Windows Server 2022 as soon as possible.

Air IT will help you make this process smooth by providing a number of services, including assessment, audit, service contract management, and training. We will also work with your IT team to identify compatibility issues, so you will avoid nasty surprises when upgrading.
